This signature Craftsman-style bungalow occupies a coveted corner lot in the historic and tranquil neighborhood of Westwood Park. Curvilinear streets, verdant front yards, and fully detached homes make this enclave a very special place to call home.
Fifteen Hazelwood is set back from the street, providing a spacious feel while the lush privacy gardens mean your daily life is screened from the outside. Built by pioneering female architect Ida McCain in 1922, the front door opens onto an elegant foyer that features an ultra-charming Juliette balcony through arched double doors. Beyond the entry, a spacious living room is framed by a wall of bow windows, vintage Batchelder tile fireplace, built-in shelving, and a handsome tray ceiling. The adjoining formal dining room offers abundant space to host a large social gathering. Bright and airy, the refreshed kitchen features new stainless-steel appliances and quartz countertops, recessed lighting and a sunny eat-in breakfast nook. Picture rails, hardwood floors with inlays, wainscoting and gumwood trim are just some of the period details that have been carefully preserved.
Nicely separated from the social rooms, the back of the home boasts a tastefully renovated bathroom and three good-sized bedrooms all on the same level. The first two bedrooms are south-facing and drenched with natural light, while the third enjoys a peaceful view overlooking the back garden. All three are equipped with double-paned windows and ample closet space.
An internal staircase from the kitchen leads to the lower level, where there is a family room with built-in shelving, ideal for showcasing your favorite books and art. An adjoining bedroom and updated full bathroom make this lower suite of rooms perfect for use as guest quarters or a private au-pair space. A flex room at the back of this level provides another option for a casual family room or home office, and opens directly into the sun-bathed lawn, flanked by raised planter beds and a shaded patio with a vine-covered trellis. Thick stands of bamboo and trees provide maximum privacy. The 2-car garage is outfitted with walls of shelving for additional storage.
15 Hazelwood is conveniently located near the shops, restaurants and retail on Ocean Avenue, with easy access to the MUNI train, Balboa Park BART station, and the I-280 freeway on ramp. A short drive or streetcar ride takes you to additional great locations like the Glen Park Village & Canyon, West Portal center, the Stonestown Mall and Farmers Market, Stern Grove and Pine Lake Park.

Westwood Park is charming little enclave, dotted with craftsmen-style bungalows constructed mostly in the early 1920s. Residents take great pride in their homes, which are very well-maintained; and an active neighborhood association works to maintain the historic nature of the neighborhood. Development of Westwood Park's 650 or so homes kicked off in 1917, in conjunction with the opening of the Twin Peaks Tunnel that connected the so-called "two cities" of downtown San Francisco and the vast tracts of land West of Twin Peaks. The layout of the neighborhood is very distinctive and easily spotted on a map. Unlike nearby Ingleside Terrace, which was literally built around a former horse track, the two main oval streets that mark Westwood Park were designed to keep residents from getting lost on winding roads. Today's residents enjoy their proximity to Ocean Avenue's commercial strip, which offers all of the everyday conveniences. A Muni streetcar runs right down Ocean Avenue as well, for access to downtown or south to the Balboa Park BART station. The neighborhood is adjacent to both San Francisco City College and the state-of-the-art Ingleside Branch of the San Francisco Library. For such a relatively small neighborhood, there is also a very active parent's group, making this a great area for families with kids.
